Question

2001 Dodge Durango engine cooling issue

Sent to Car Experts October 17, 2006 3:17 p.m.

I have a 2001 Dodge Durango with 120.000 miles. My question is what would make my tempurature rise when idling but driving down the highway the temperature to read normal. By normal I mean that the temperature gauge stays at the 12 o'clock position and when hot it moves to the 2 o'clock positon on the gauge.

When the vehicle stands at idle the fan only draws in air at a lower rate. When the vehicle is moving the air is forced through the radiator which promotes quicker overall cooling plus the circulation is improved. It is normal for the temperature to rise at idle and decrease with movement. Going uphill the heat will climb and when traveling downhill it will go back down.

THank you for the reply. So it is normal for there to be that much change in the temperature. If you are looking at the gauge, it has the c for cold then a quarter point, a halway point, a 3 quarter level, then the red or hot level. At idle, the gauge reads about 3 quarter on the gauge and when driving on the highway, it reads about the half way level. Just want to make sure I am understanding properly.

Yes, some gauges will run "hotter" than others. Make sure the belts is tight and free of any grease or dirt. If you're real worried you can stop by a Radiator Repair Shop and let them take an "actual" temperature reading while idling.
