what damage can driving in a low gear at 50 mph do to my car

i just bought a 1993 oldsmoblie cutlass ceria for $700.00. It didn't even make it home. The gearing system was messed up to where it indacated i was in drive when i was actually in drive 1. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my car. Well now it will crank over but will not start. I don't have the money to take it to someone. O yea it's backfiring though the intake. Could you please let me know what you might think it could be.
