can engine blow-by cause a rear main seal to leak in a crate motor?

Sent to Car Experts October 04 02:46 PM

i bought a crate motor, and had a profesional certified shop install it - can engine blow-by cause a rear main seal to leak? the blow-by was excessive from installation (it blew the pcv valve out of the valve cover), 2 days later the main seal is leaking! and what would cause this amount of blow-by in a brand new motor?

Hello!

yes, excessive engine blow-by can certainly cause a rear main seal to leak. If there was enough blow-by to push the PCV valve out, then there is an internal engine problem and they should replace it under warranty for you. Excessive blow-by will cause crankcase pressure to be high, forcing oil out through any weak point it can find (shch as an oil seal).

The only possible causes for excessive blow-by (combustion pressure leakage into the oil pan) are (1) Improperly machined cylinder walls (2) Improperly fitted piston rings (3) Piston ring gaps aligned due to improper installation (4) Broken piston ring due to improper assembly (5) broken piston.

This is not a fault of the shop that performed the installation; the symptoms you describe are due to an internal engine fault. therefore, the company that remanufactured the engine should cover the parts and labor needed to correct the problem.

I hope this is helpful; if so, please click my accept button and leave positive feedback! thanks!

can we continue talking through e-mail, please?

my e-mail is masterdsygn2@yahoo.com

i need some serious information on this whole thing.
the problem is this my mechanic new about the problem, didnt inform me of it, and my wife ran it out of oil, causing the heat plug to melt, and now i suspect the rings are toast. it has been running, and is continueing to run, for the last month, since the installation.

so in part this is a manufacturers defect, my mechanic withholding information, and ultimately my wife disregarding the check oil light! yeah im totally screwed right?
