I just read how to replace a 2002 PT Cruiser battery, but mine is a 2001 and the answer to that question does not work on the 2001 PT Crusier I have. There is no clamp holding the battery, and it seems as though I may have to go at it from the bottom of the tray?? Also, I took off the air cleaner top, but the bottom housing does not seem to "lift out" and I dont see any screws holding the housing. Please help..this was so simple 20 years ago!

Optional Information:
2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser 4 Cylinder

Already Tried:
Took off top of air cleaner, battery does not have clamp. Cannot seem to remove bottom of air cleaner either.

Here is the procedure rfor replacing the battery, as it is printed in the service manual for the vehicle:

  • Make sure ignition switch is in OFF position and all accessories are OFF.
  • Open hood,
  • Remove Air Cleaner Box
  • Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable then the positive cable
  • Loosen bolt and retainer that holds the battery down to the tray (Fig. 11).
  • Lift battery out of battery tray and remove from vehicle.
  • Remove thermowrap from battery
  • Images available only to Customers.

You will note in the illustration that the clamp that is referred to is a small 2 inch long plastic block that holds the very bottom edge of the battery to the tray. It can be removed with a 13mm socket and a long extention. If your vehicle does not have a battery box, it may have been removed during a previous battery replacmement.
