One end of the cable connects to the back of the speedometer, and the other end is attached to the transaxle (transmission) near where the axle shafts exit the trans.

SPEEDOMETER CABLE

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Remove the instrument cluster (see below) and disconnect the cable at the speedometer. On some models it may be possible to disconnect the cable by reaching under the dash. Some connectors screw onto the back of the speedometer; others are held by plastic clips.

  3. Disconnect the other end of the speedometer cable at the transaxle housing and pull the cable from its jacket at the transmission end. If you are replacing the cable because it is broken, don't forget to remove both pieces of broken cable. When removing the speedometer cable from the transaxle, it is not necessary to remove the entire cable holder. Remove the end boot (gear holder seal), the cable retaining clip and then pull the cable out of the holder. In no way should you disturb the holder, unless it is absolutely necessary.

  4. Lubricate the new cable with graphite speedometer cable lubricant and feed it into the cable jacket from the lower end.

  5. Connect the cable to the transaxle, then to the speedometer. Note that both ends of the cable are square; the ends must fit properly in the fittings.

  6. Install the instrument cluster.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

1984-85 Accord

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Remove the steering wheel.

  3. Remove the three screws at the top of the bezel (surround or trim piece). Use a spray lubricant such as silicone or vinyl protectant to lubricate the area between the bezel and the dashboard. The panel is a tight fit.

Fig. 1: The bezel is secured by three screws

  1. Remove the trim panel from the dash. A prytool may be used at the bottom, but great care must be taken not to crack the plastic.

  2. When the panel is loose in the dash, remove the 4 screws securing the gauge assembly. Pull the gauge assembly forward just enough to allow access to the wires and speedometer cable.

  3. Disconnect the speedometer cable and the electrical harnesses. Do not pull on the wires when disconnecting the harnesses. Remove the gauge assembly.

  4. Individual instruments may be removed from the cluster after it is removed from the car. Avoid damage to any terminals or the printed circuit board.

To install:

  1. Install the gauge cluster; connect the wiring and speedometer cable before it is fully in place. Install the retaining screws.

  2. Re-lubricate the area contacted by the bezel. Install the bezel, making certain it is evenly placed with no gaps or bends.

  3. Install the retaining screws.

  4. Install the steering wheel.

Here is a picture showing the speed sensor on a later model with a similar automatic transmission. The speed sensor attaches at the same point as the speedometer cable that you have.

The speed sensor is mounted near where the axle shaft enters the transaxle. In the picture above, you can see the hole where the axle shaft goes into the transaxle right above the "www".
