when i press on the gas pedal the rpms go up but the

when i press on the gas pedal the rpms go up but the car does not go anywhere. The speedometer does nothing, and the car sometimes jerks as if having trouble shifting into gear.

Check your fluid level. Also check the color of the fluid and the smell. If it is dark and smells burnt, then you have internal problems and will most likely need to have it rebuilt. However, ,if the fluid seems red and ok, and its just low, you might be able to fill it and get normal operation again. If that works then you will deffinetly want to check for leaks(the fluid had to go somewhere).
