Question

camshaft sensor problem

Sent to Car Experts September 14, 2006 4:25 p.m.

I have a 1997 ford taurus with a 3.0 motor and approx. 170,000 miles. It runs great. This past weekend, we drove to yellowstone for 4 days and put approx 1200 miles on the car- absolutely no problems. We went back home, and the next morning I started the car. When I starte4d the car the Service Engine Soon light came on. The motor runs fine with no unusual noises, etc.   I took the car to Autozone and they put an auto analyzer on the car. It showed a camshaft sensor problem.
My questions, should I ignore the problem, what are the consequences, and how long before these problems occur.
p.s. we are from TN and are currently in WY for 3 months. Have been burning 85.5 gasoline, is this a factor?

No, you definately don't want to ignore that problem. that sensor is responsible for synchronizing the fuel injecters. There are 2 parts to it. the sensor itself is just a plastic piece on top of the unit that is not very expensive or hard to change at all. Sometimes it is damaged by the synchronizer which is the part it's screwed to. That piece can add a lot to the price but it still needs to be taken care of.
