ISSUE

A "moaning" noise may be heard from the power steering during engine idle. This noise may be most noticeable during engine warm up.

ACTION

Refer to the following SERVICE PROCEDURE for diagnostic and service information.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

< border="0"><>< class="clsNoteLabel">NOTE:<>Make sure this noise is not confused with steering "grunt" or "honking" noise during steering wheel return from full right turn. Steering pump "moan" can occur during any steering wheel movement. Moan may also be heard without steering wheel movement and will intensify as the steering wheel is moved. Refer to TSB 97-13-3 for 1997 model year vehicles if vehicle has steering grunt.

  1. Check the power steering fluid level. Both a high and low fluid level can cause excessive noise.
  2. Inspect the power steering lines and make sure they are not grounded on any part of the vehicle.
  3. Purge power steering system of air. Refer to Section 11-00 of the appropriate Taurus/Sable Service Manual.
  4. If the above Steps do not correct the concern, replace the power steering pressure lines using Power Steering Service Kit. Refer to the Instruction Sheet included with the kit for installation procedures.
  5. After installing the kit, be sure to purge the system of air. Refer to Section 11-00 of the Service Manual for details.

Reply to GENE's Post: I don't beleive this is a power steering issue. I already had the power steering checked. The frequency of th whining increase with engine speed. It almost sounds as if the starter has not dull retracted aftger starting, However, this was also checked and mot fund to be the problem.

The whining noise is evident when the engine is first started after a long period of not running and continues for about 5 minutes after the car is running. I reduces and the noise seams to go away. then I hear it again while I am shifting from park to drive.

During the first five minutes of travel, the noise lesson until if finally goes away. During the first minute or so the sound occurs when the engine RPM is just above Idle, apprx 900 RPM ND UP. As time passes, the sound in not eveident until the engine RPM is approximatelly at 1800 RPM. So after that the sound is no longer heard..

Noises are hard to diagnose on the internet, the best that i can offer is to give you some possibilitys. This may be a timing chain tensioner failing,a transmission fluid pump failing or a seal in the transmission.Did the mechanic indiacate any problem when you had the power steering checked?
