Question

Car lunges and cuts out while traveling at high rates of speed.

Sent to Car Experts September 13, 2006 11:51 a.m.

1999 Sebring, 67000 miles. I have had a problem over the past month with my car "cutting out" while driving. It sort of lunges, rpms go down, then it catches and goes on. It happened usually at high freeway speed, but this morning happened at 45 mph. Thinking bad gas, have run several tanks of gas thru it from different dealers with no response. It happens with and without cruise control. The fuel filter has never been changed. When I discussed this with a mechanic he said the filter was very hard to get to; i.e.; rather expensive, so wanted to get your ideas before paying this, especially if it is not the answer. Thanks.

do you experince this at about the same speed window everytime while holding throttle stedy? i.e. 45-55

does it do fine at other rpms and speeds?

most generally a clogged fuel filter will cause surging at idle too

It has only hesitated once doing 45, never at an idle. It was a high speed problem totally until today. It doesn't really even act like it is going to stall. The feeling is kind of like the car is accidentally thrown into neutral and then put back into drive, except for the fact that the rpms drop.

You got it pretty much. Tooling along at whatever speed (usually more than 45, it seems to happen at 55 or higher)the car just cuts out then before you can do anything it picks right back up again. It doesn't accelerate per se, just goes back to whatever speed you were doing before it had its seizure. It feels like it just ran out of gas...Sorry, can't seem to explain it any better.
