transmission for Toyota Corrolla, new or rebuilt, or junk it?

Sent to Car Experts September 09 01:23 PM

I have a Toyota Corrolla DX Wagon 1995 that is developing sounds like "ugh - ugh - ugh" when I come to a slow halt. New brakes front and back within 2 months, told it was not the brakes but the transmission making that new sound. If it is the transmission, how long before it goes out, and should I get a new one put in, or junk the car and get another? I like this car very much, get 27 city and 32 highway miles and it's paid for! Is it worth a rebuilt transmission? should I get a new transmission? How much am I looking at to save this car?
Thanks very much,
Patricia

Reply to GENE's Post: The car has 215,000 miles on it. It runs great, and I get about 33 mpg on the highway. The paint is peeling, but no major dents. It hardly burns any oil. However, I just put a quart of transmission fluid in it as it was down a quart. I haven't driven it more than 8 miles since, so I don't know if that will help or cure the problem or have nothing to do with it. Thanks for your attention.

A car with this many miles on it will not be worth putting the amount of money that a new trans mission will cost ($1800-$2500. a used transmission will go from$400-$650 plus $400-$600 to install it.My advise is to drive it until the trans goes completly out and then replace the car

Reply to GENE's Post: Well, I was hoping for a miracle, but I do accept your advice. I am wondering if you could make a guess as to how long before the transmission goes out, and when will it be dangerous to drive the car? How will I know? Will the noise get louder and will there be a problem with safety at some point?

I appreciate your answer and advice.

You will know when it's time,it should not be dangerous, the transmission will just stop working. As far as how long it will last,i cant even guess,no mechanic will be able to tell you that.I would not take any long trips, but it may last a long time or it may go tomorrow. There just is no way to tell, but my advice is to start looking for a car.
