Still running hot.
Sent to Car Experts September 06 06:09 PM

I have a 1994 Ford Taurus SHO with a 3.2 engine and it is an auto trans. When I first bought I drove it home about 125 miles from where I bought it, it staid cool (temp). The next day I changed all the fluids (oil, trans, etc.) also I flushed the radiator. First the radiator blew a hole, so I replaced the radiator, added proper coolant, I noticed that it was running hot not overheating but hotter than i thought it should ( about the O and the M in normal). So the I changed the thermastat and refilled with coolant, still ran the same. Then it blew one of the hoses that go to the heater core, so I went ahead and changed all the hoses and the water pump, radiator cap to rule them out. I have also made sure there are no air pockets in the cooling systom, the fan comes on but im not sure how often it should, also when the air is on it runs where it should( about a 1/4 of the way, between the A and the L) , same with the heater on. I dont lose any coolant and when I let the car sit and run in my driveway it stays in the middle of the gage, the only thing left is the heater core but the drain on my fire wall does not leak I dont know why that would be bad, oh also I have replaced both coolant sensors near the thermastat. I dont get any smoke or water from the tail pipes and there seems to be no leaks anywhere, so I dont think the head gasket is bad. HELP.

Welcome to JA,

It could be that when you flushed it some rust came loose and is plugging some of the water channel. When the air is on it turns the fans on full blast. when the heater is on it acts as an extra little radiator. It could also be air in the system.

When the entire cooling system is drained, the following procedure should be used to ensure a complete fill.

  1. Install the block drain plug, if removed, and close the draincock. With the engine off, add antifreeze to the radiator to a level of 50 percent of the total cooling system capacity. Then add water until it reaches the radiator filler neck seat.

  1. Install the radiator cap to the first notch to keep spillage to a minimum.

  2. Start the engine and let it idle until the upper radiator hose is warm. This indicates that the thermostat is open and coolant is flowing through the entire system.

  3. Carefully remove the radiator cap and top off the radiator with water. Install the cap on the radiator securely.

  4. Fill the coolant recovery reservoir to the FULL COLD mark with antifreeze, then add water to the FULL HOT mark. This will ensure that a proper mixture is in the coolant recovery bottle.

  5. Check for leaks at the draincock.

Welcome to JA,

If a head gasket was blown you would be loosing coolant from the radiator. It would either be leaking out between the head and the block and running down, running into the oil pan and turning the oil milky white, or going into one or more cylinders and white smoke would come from the exhaust pipe.

This engine wasn't one of he most common for this car. If it is bad you can have it rebuilt or substitute one of the V6s.

Are you sure you put in the correct radiator for the car?
