honda transmission question
Sent to Car Experts September 05 12:10 AM

Today I took my 2002 Honda Civic (98,000 miles) for an oil change; I was having no problems with my car just needed an oilchange. While there, the person working on my car recommended a new air filter and also said the transmission fluid needed to be changed. I agreed to have this done. When I left, I noticed that the car was skipping gears and the RPMs were racing a lot (between 6-8 when I put my foot on the gas to go forward). Eventually, I was unable to go forward at all and the car stopped accelerating as I was on my way back to the shop to have them check it out. After 1 hour of them trying to figure out what happened, the wrker said he thought he used the wrong type of transmission fluid, because he just realized it took a certain kind (?). Anyway, had to leave my car there because they could not figure out what to do and I now have a rental. Could you please give me some advice on what may have gone wrong. I am very upset and don't know what to do. Thank you.

If the service was not performed at the dealer or Honda certified facility, more than likely the Transmission oil exchange was done incorrectly. It's very possibly the wrong fluid was installed, but my experience with this is that it takes longer than a short trip to ruin your trans. Unless he added motor oil to your trans, or another completely wrong fluid??? More than likely the mechanic left the fluid low, or even worse, forgot to add any in - unfortunalty it happens. Basically the facility is going to be responsible for a new transmission for the vehicle, but I would tow it to a dealer, and give the repair shop the bill, or arrange for them to pay the dealer. The last thing you want them doing is trying to save a buck on your vehicle, since it's their fault, let a third part facility repair the vehicle.
