speedomter head

Sent to Car Experts September 03 06:49 PM

3 months ago I took my car in to be looked at because as I drove I would hear a sound from the left front wheel almost equal to the revolution of that wheel.(sounded like a creak) The mechanic said it was the speedometer head and replaced it. The same noise is back and of course the warranty is no longer in effect. I had no problem with the speedometer beforehand so am curious if this really was the problem and if not what recourse I have.

HI

The Creak Noise could be from a hub cap if you have one.
From the brakes and can also come from the cv joint or boot.

Also i would have the lug nuts rechecked for being tight. this also
could make a noise if the rim to hub if the nuts are not tight.

Reply to Red's Post: So if it was a problem with the speedometer head the "symptom" would be different?

BULLETIN NO.: 95-T-27B

ISSUE DATE: April, 1998

GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Electrical-13

CORPORATION NO.: 5883O3R

SUBJECT:
Clicking, Ticking or Rubbing Noise from Instrument Cluster Odometer (Replace Speedometer/Odometer Assembly)

Due to the addition of 1997 vehicles and 1998 vehicles originally produced with a mechanical odometer, and the availability of a revised remanufactured service part, this bulletin supercedes bulletin 95-T-27A, which should be discarded.

MODELS AFFECTED:

1995-1997 Saturns and 1998 Saturns originally produced with a mechanical Odometer. (Refer to parts requirements for VIN breakpoints)

CONDITION:

Some customers may comment that an excessive clicking, ticking or rubbing type noise can be heard from the instrument cluster assembly while driving the vehicle.

IMPORTANT : A very slight clicking noise is normal due to the odometer design which increments in steps rather than a continuous motion.

CAUSE:

Displacement of dampening grease internal to the odometer stepper motor.

CORRECTION:

Verify that the clicking/ticking or rubbing noise can only be heard while the vehicle is being driven and that the frequency of the noise is proportional to the vehicle speed.

If the condition is verified, replace the speedometer/odometer assembly according to the procedure in this bulletin.
