My 86 Cougar (3.8) won’t fire up today. Has gas, new battery, tries to start, but then quits. Could it be spark plugs or even fuel injection problem? I took it down a 3 mile, bumpy dirt road the other day. nothing else different.

See if it will start with a shot of starting fluid sprayed into the throttle body. Don't try this if you haven't used starting fluid before!

Better troubleshooting is to check fuel pressure, injector pulse, injector spray pattern.

Could also be flooded. Try starting by holding gas pedal to floor. Or inspect a couple of spark plugs after engine cranking. Are the plugs wet or dry?

Response to jon_050's Post: Thank you very much for the info. I think I know how to use the starting fluid and will doublecheck on this when I purchase the fluid.
I had trouble with the fuel injector before, by the way. I will take your advice; hopefully I will be on the road again soon.
