2003 FORD EXPEDITION 4x4

2003 Ford Expedition 4x4:
Back in March I had brought my Expy (46,000k miles) into the dealer to have the rear differential replaced for a whining that happens from bearing misalignment. They also had to replace what i believe is the clutch pack. I also brought it in about a month later for the tranny clunking into 2nd on decelleration at 20mph. The dealer told me that the computer didnt throw any codes and couldnt find anything. I was told by some Expy owners that its a characteristic.
My recent problem is that now I have a groan on decelleration at about 30mph to a complete stop. Also sometimes groans on an upshift at about 40mph at accelleration when the RPMs drop to 1000. I thought it might have been the self adjusting brakes but when i decellerate and hear it, i let up on the brake and it still makes the groan. Also thought it might be the tranny but when i hear the groan on decelleration, if i put it in neutral, it makes no difference and still hear the groan. Also thought maybe was something like the A/C pump but happens when its off too. The groan is a movement thing so it cant be engine. Thought it could be the bearings or something in the wheels but once again only happens at 30mph decelleration and sometimes as it up shifts at 40mph and the RPMs drop around 1000. Hard to recreat the groan all the time as it doesnt happen all the time, but when it starts, it usually does it at every stop.
Could this possibly be the clutch pack or a tranny issue?? The tranny does NOT slip or shift odd. I have no problems with the tranny so i doubt it would throw a code. Its going to be difficult to explain to the dealer if i cant recreate the groan all the time and the tranny wont throw any codes as they said it didnt before with the clunk into 2nd. Would like to have some kind idea before I bring it in and they all say . . . "here he comes again".
Thank you.
Andie

The groan you hear is a symptom of the pinion bearing being to tight or a problem with the pinion bearing to loose,or the bearing on the pinion starting to fail. The dealer will be able to find this with a easy test. Its called a chassis ears and it will determine where the noise is coming from very easily.

Yes the pinion bearing in the rear end is (or may) be the problem, rear ends are really tough to repair and one spec out of place and the rear end lasts 6 months.

Reply to GENE's Post: Thank you very much. . . because the groan sounds like its coming from the front drivers side. . .just like the whine did when the rear end was shot to begin with. . .
