gearing
Sent to Car Experts August 31 03:42 AM

I am looking to buy a 1989 1989 4.2L V6 5 speed tranny 4x4 jeep sahara. It has a new Transmision, Rear Differential, 4" suspention Lift by Superlift, steering stabilizer, and 33x10.50 BFGoodrich mud terrain tires. However, it has stock gearing for the car, which the guy thinks are 2.73. My research that I have done leads to that you HAVE to have different gearing in order to run bigger tires, or else you burn through your clutch and gears, although I just don't know. What do you think? Have to have new gearing or can stock be sufficient. I plan to offroad a little little bit, also lots highway/tahoe

It will work but it will not be the best set up. 3.73 or 4.11 would be much better set up with that size tires. The 4.0 does have enough torque to move it with the 2.73 gears. The 5 speed with help with the street driving and the low range of the transfer case will make it usable off road but it still would be better with at least 373 gears. My rough figures show that your cruise rpm will drop by 200 rpm going from 28" tires to 33"tires and then going from 2.73 gears to 3.73 gears will give you back 300 rpm. As I said it will be drivable but for optimum performance the gear swap would be best.

Reply to Tim Basham's Post: So to clarify, I won't ruin anything by running stock gears with 33's?

No you won't ruin anything but you will notice some loss of power.
