Hi I have a 1996 mustang cobra double overhead cam 4.6 I have a paxton supercharger less than 8 lbs of boost and I just put on bassani headers. My question I have a strange noise coming from my timing chain or from my cam chains, and I have never heard this before, could the headers cause any new problems. I always change the oil at 3000 miles with syn mobil 1. 83,000 original miles. it sounds like a cement mixer right now until you give it revs?????    thanks     Dale

Optional Information:
1996 Ford cobra 4.6 dbl cams

Already Tried:
Just listening and ready to break down valve covers and timing chain.

Reply to BOBBY's Post: Hi No a week later and about 500 miles of driving the car, the noise was just there nothing really happended. It sounds like a timing chain guide or something to me but it's a lot of work to start removing stuff becoz I have the supercharger in the way too. I still think it has something to do with headers??? The clacking noise goes away with some revs put on the engine too!!!

The headers themselves will be slightly noisey. They will actually cause sort of a clacking sound. It is strange though if it didn't happen immediately after they were put on. Does the sound appear to be coming more from the front of the engine or the header area.

Reply to BOBBY's Post: my mechanic used an engine stethoscope and did'nt really pinpoint it for me. But no it is not coming from the exhaust area. However, the bassani pipes have a "collecto" which does reverberate some of this sound. But it is a much larger clacking sound I guess on top of the engine.

And you really only get the noise at idle? Does the tone of the noise change at all when the engine warms up?

It does sound like you have some looseness in the timing chain. Just to be sure though, this is a long shot, double check your heat shields near your catalytic converters. These have a tendancy to come loose and reverberate through the manifolds.
