I have a 1974 mg midget and you can't shift into gear ...

I have a 1974 mg midget and you can't shift into gear while vehicle is on, but if you turn the car off then you can put it into gear and go

You need to replace the clutch.It's that simple,however I don't have instructions for how you do it on that car.I would suggest finding a service manual for your car.You may be able to get on at www.alldata.com It would cost about $25 last time I checked.Most clutches are fairly straight forward if you have some mechanical ability.The clutch may also need to be adjusted if you have a lot of freeplay in the pedal.

ok someone told me that it wasn't the clutch because it can shift into a gear if you turn the car off. They said the slave cylinder is shot would this be true? This guy acts like he knows everything but he doesn't and I need this car fixed and fixed right so for sure its the clutch?
