I just brought a 1998 volkswagon jetta yesterday (everything was all fine and dandy) until of course I'm driving to work!!!

Everything was fine until I tried merging on my right hand side the car next to me was speeding so I had no choice to get back in my lane... I must've been going about 50 Mph and then I started to see lots of smoke come from the back right wheel... I didn't have a flat but smoke was coming out the sides of the rim... it stopped after 5 minutes or so.. and now I'm hearing a load screaching sound when I'm applying the brakes??? What can this be??? It's not the hand break that's all the way down!!!

HELP me
Martha

It sounds as if your rear caliper or drum brake is stuck in the applied position. This is not a big deal but will require brake part replacment. I would advise going back to the place you bought the vehicle and they should repair it if the are a good bussiness. The reason for the sound is that either your brake pad or shoe is metal to metal. Possible causes are bad brake line, wheel cylinder, caliper, or e-brake cables or acuating lever. Even if your e-brake lever is in the down position it can still be hanging up. This can be an expensive repair depending on the parts requires to repair it. I hope this helps

Reply to Telles's Post: So you're telling me even if the e-brake is down it's not necessarily down?? can this be a pre-exisiting condition??? Or could I have broken something already??? Or maybe since I quickly pulled the steering wheel to the left when I was unable to merge I might've broken something?? I'm just curious and making sure this wasn't something just waiting to happend!
