79vette-won't turn starter over
Sent to Car Experts August 19 03:21 PM

79 vette-94,800 miles- car will not start- new battery installed- starter removed and checked ok-battery terminals brand new- turn key to satart and no starter-have power to car though-stereo, power windows, lights all work- when key is engaged to start position volt gauge reads 12 volts and idiot lights are on(normal) but starter does not engage-this car is an automatic and I have tried to start it in all gear selections-could this be a problem with the neutral safety switch? or power to the satrter? I am perplexedand don't know what else to check-also, I tried to hook up a remote starter switch and got nothing-maybe i didn't have it hooked up to the right connections- it's a 2 wire from MAC with a red light to tell you you have power-any help would be gratefully appreciated...................

Try taking a piece of automotive electrical wire and connect it to the positive side of the battery and then touch it to the small start (S) wire of the starter. (be careful not to touch anything but the start wire, and make sure it is out of gear OK?)

Hit 'Reply' (not 'Accept') to let me know if it turns over OK?

So you tried the wire to starter thing and it still did not crank?

Does your battery have a least 12 volts?

Reply to Wydranator's Post: i just recharged it and i also used another battery that i thought was ok-same results-also tried to jump start car-nothing-car was turning over but when it first cranked it was slow but within 5-10 seconds it picked up speed but wouldn't start, let off key and that was when it would not turn over anymore-this car has in the recent past just quit running but started right back up- it has done this once recently

I'm sorry, but it all sounds like a wacky starter to me. Even though it checked out on the bench test, that doesn't mean that it isn't bad.

I wish I could be there to test it myself, but that's what it sounds like to me.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Russ
