Question

2002 Envoy - No Reverse

Sent to Car Experts August 13, 2006 12:04 a.m.

My family and I live in AZ. We drive to Sedondo on I17 while drive up a hill. We heard a mild spinning gear-like noise coming from under the 2002 GMC Envoy. Quickly I pull over the highway and the noise stop. We checked all the gears and the truck worked on all gears. We made it safely to Sedundo with no problems. Parked the vehicle and spent the day in Sedondo, AZ. Lovely town. On our return trip to Tucson, we stopped to gas up about 20 miles south of Sedundo. And guess what... NO reverese. We were all shocked. The truck ran normal in all gears but reverse (with exception you can hear the truck taking longer to switch gears from full stop first and second gear). I will take the truck to the dealer for repair soon. My family and I would appreciate your advise as to what the problem might be.. new transmission or some reverse modular has to be replace... hope it's the latter. By the way, the Envoy has 97K miles. Note; none of the reverse features work neither.. side mirrors adjustment, doors don't lock, etc.

It's possible that the neutral safety switch on the side of the trans has failed. It won't be a bad fuse because if the fuse for the switch was blown the vehicle wouldn't start. If it's taking longer to shift gears I suggest you count your shifts. The truck has a four speed trans in it so you should feel three shifts,1-2 shift,2-3 shift and the 3-4 shift. If you don't feel those shifts you probably have a bad reaction sun shell inside the transmission. That is a common problem on that trans but wouldn't explain the mirrors not going into curb assist. The switch being bad would explain all of your problems though.
