Question

Brakes losing pressure

Sent to Car Experts August 11, 2006 12:44 p.m.

My brakes won't hold any pressure, however I'm not losing any brake fluid. I have a 1995 Toyota Celica, the brakes have been fading for a while. I can pump the brakes and it will hold pressure for two or three seconds before the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor. When the petal reaches the floor. I have a back brakes. How can I fix this problem?

Optional Information:
1995 Toyota celica 1.6

REPLIED Check Mark

Check the fluid level in the master cylinder...if it's low or was low before you topped it off, then that's an indication that you have low brake linings in the front, rear or both. If you have drum brakes and not disc in the rear then they'll have to be adjusted so they don't have to travel so far when you apply the pedal. Anytime you have a brake problem...it''s in your best interest to pull all 4 wheels and do a brake check for lining level and leaks.

The brake fluid is not, nor has been low. I'm not very mechanical of my brake fluid reservoir was not low, and that is my master cylinder. How can I be losing pressure without losing brake fluid?
thank you for your time

ACCEPTED Check Mark

If the red BRAKE light on the dash is not on constantly, then you don't want to condemn the master cylinder before you do a brake lining check...you can do that yourself if you have a jack and a lug wrench OR take it somewhere they're doing free brake inspections around town and have them show you where the linings are at when they have the wheels pulled. If the linings are low there will be EXCESSIVE pedal travel and you have to remedy that before condemning the master cylinder.
