Question

Check Engine light

Sent to Car Experts August 11, 2006 12:42 p.m.

My Check Engine light comes on and stays on. One automotive parts store used a device to plug in under my dash to get a code. It was 0171 but they didn't have a reference book to tell what the code meant. Can you tell me? I have a 2000 Mercury Mystic, 4 cyl. with 92,000 miles.

Thanks.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Yes 0171 is the code for bank one too lean. Since a 4 cylinder only has one bank of cylinders it is saying that it is reading an very, very lean fuel condition its fuel control is at ful rich and the condition is not changing. First thing would be to check the O2 sensor and make sure it is reading properly. If that checks out do a fuel pressure and volume test. Pressure is 35psi to 55psi and volume is 12oz. in 15 seconds. When was the lasttime the fuel filter was replaced? Life span around 30,000 miles. I will send some test flow charts to help you out. I'll be around if you need more help. Please accept my answer if you are satisfied.
