Question

What do I need to remove the clutch from the air ...

Sent to Car Experts August 10, 2006 11:15 p.m.

What do I need to remove the clutch from the air conditioning compressor on a 95 Chevy Caprice ? What size nut holds the clutch on ? I have the Y type wrench for the front of the clutch & the puller but cannot see into the front to determine what is holding it in place. Any Ideas ?

Optional Information:
1995 Chevrolet Caprice 350ci / 5.7L

Already Tried:
Every size socket I have that will fit into the center of the clutch. Can't see into unit. Don't know if there's something else blocking it inside.

As far as I know there is not a nut holding the clutch on. It is a press fit with a lock key holding it together. You need a special clutch remover to take it off.

I have the removing tool but I think there's still something else holding the clutch on the compressor. Is there some kind of split ring or snap ring in there ?

From what I remember and what I see in my manual there is no nut or clip of any kind. There is just a keyway that holds it on. With the puller it should pull right off with some pressure.

One of the manuals I have shows a nut, another one shows some type of clip. Guess I'll just try to animal it off.

FYI
There is a nut on the shaft holding the clutch on the compressor. Unfortunately, it's not a standard nut but looks more like a thick washer with a tail on it. Notched out an old socket to try to remove it but it won't hold. Will change out the compressor instead.
