I am working on a 1999 Silverado 4x4 , 4.8liter. The starter was bad so I replaced it but after reassembly the starter clicks but doesn't turn over. I pulled the new starter and had it checked . It checked out ok. After reinstalling it I checked the fuses which were ok so I replaced the starter relay. The battery seemed low so I jumped it and it started. After a short drive I shut off motor and it would not restart even with jumper cables. It just clicks and lights dim . Any ideas? Thanks, John

Hello,

Sounds like you may have a bad alternator. I would check the alternator to make sure it is charging the battery. Make sure when you check the alt. to turn everything on (headlights ,wipers, heater blower,etc..) and see how it does under a load.

Hope this helps.. Please Accept.

Thanks, Dean

Reply to Dean's Post: While I was driving it the guage on the dash was showing a charge rate of 15volts. I can't get the truck restarted to check alt.

Hello,

I would still have it checked. Gages can be misleading at times. Also when you have it checked they will be able to see how many amps your starter is drawing when you start. They can also see how your alt and battery do under a load. Usually a test like this is not real expensive. My shop charges $9.95 for it. Also you could have a battery that can hold a load. Thsi test will find this out.

Thanks, Dean
