Control Modules
Sent to Car Experts August 05 05:07 PM

2001 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado Z71. 5.3L. Having problems with a control module that controls the 4 wheel drive selector switch and transfer case motor. Message displayed is "Service 4 Wheel Drive". Dealer has replaced two of these modules in the last eight months and now the latest one is gone. They have agreed to change it under warranty but exactly which module controls this? Is it the BCM or the PCM? Also, any ideas as to what may be causing these to fail? Two of these actually smoked.

Reply to JONATHAN's Post: Yes the encoder motor was replaced the last time however this time (approx. 2 weeks ago) t was 90 degrees out,I just left a restaurant, entered the truck and started it. My passenger lowed the passenger side electric window. We noticed that the window was going down slowly and the interior lights were dim. I checked the alternator gauge and it was showing about 8-10 volts. At that point the service 4 wheel drive message appread and the indicator lights on the 4 wheel drive selector switch were out.
