I picked up a 1986 Ford F-250 with a 6.9 diesel automatic transmission. I have an intermitted problem with the starter not turning over when the key is turned. It usually happens when the engine is warm. If I pull up and giggle the shift leaver she will crank the starter and fire right up. I’m thinking it’s the neutral safety switch on the transmission or the ignition switch on the column. Are there any adjustments on these switches or tests I can perform to see which one is defective?

REPLIED Check Mark

The neutral safety switch on the transmission sounds like the problem see if it will start in neutral.

With a test light you can check for voltage at the wire connector from the safety switch. Just check for voltage at each point highlighted in yellow.Images available only to Customers.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

If I remember correctly, Neutral Safety Switches on C6's were adjustable...look at the Neutral Safety Switch on the side of the trans and loosen the two bolts attaching it and loosend them...have someone hold the key to start and move the switch back and forth slowly until it trys to start and lock it down there.
