What is the secret to removing the alternator belt and ...

Sent to Car Experts July 27, 2006 7:47 a.m.

What is the secret to removing the alternator belt and power steering belt from a 1997 Nissan Sentra (with AC). I've tried loosening the center nut of the idler pulley for the alternator belt, and I've tried loosening the locknut for the other drive belt, but nothing gets any looser.

Optional Information:
1997 Nissan sentra 1.6 L

Already Tried:
Loosening lock nut and turning adjusting nut for power steering belt. Also, loosening center nut on idler pulley for alternator belt.

These may not be your exact setups but the type of adjusters are used on all of them.

Besides the center nut, there is an adjusting bolt that moves the pulley in or out.

Thanks. I have discovered that I need to put a wrench on the center nut of the idler pulley and use wrench as a lever to take spring pressure off belt at the idler, thus loosening the belt.

I still wonder about the smaller belt that drives the power steering etc. I think I loosened the locknut and turned the adjusting bolt but nothing seemed to get any looser.
