87 bronco 4x4 spindel removal
Sent to Car Experts October 22 04:01 PM

I have an 87 ford bronco. I’m changing the ball joints and drag link. I have taken the hub and rotor off, butt cannot get the spindel or splash off. I have loosened the six bolts holding the spindel on. The book says tap with a rubber mallet. I’ve done this, as well as a mini-sledge with a screwdriver and chisel. It is supposed to be connected to the knuckle and should come off. what can i do? I’ve been working on this same problem for 3 days. It is a 4x4 with auto hubs and a 5.0L engine.

Response to RICKANDBOYS's Post: the ball joints are pressed in. i have the press to remove them, but i can't get to them until i remove the spindel and axel. the spindel is not like your typical spindel which would be connected to ball joints. the spindel is bolted on to the knuckle. you are supposed to unbolt the spindel, tap it off, remove the splash guard ( which is behind the spindel) and then pull the axel through the knuckle. The spindel doesn't seem to come off like that. That is the way the book explains it, but I could be wrong.

how will the heat loosen a part that is "rust-welded"? Also what type of heat would I use? Is a coleman torch adapter okay? I did take the bolts off also. Is wd-40 the best chemical or is there something stronger? Would I apply heat then the spray or spray let it set then heat it up? How long should I let the spray set, basically what is the exact procedure you would use?

Okay, I know, or hear, PB blaster is the better rust breaker. I have a torch, the nuts are off the bolts. I have applied heat along with the PB. How long will i need to apply the heat? Also since the spindel is directly against the knuckle, will the knuckle expand as well preventing the removal? What would be the exact process you would use? Make it idiot proof for me please, meaning amount of time, amount of lubricant and setting of such, where to apply the heat and so on. This seems like such an easy part to remove and is making me feel very stupid, because it isn't moving. I'm afraid i'm going to damage the part and taking it to the shop isn't an option any longer, due to the amount of money and time i've invested to do it myself.PLEASE HELP!!!
