Nissan Quest timing belt repair

Sent to Car Experts July 25 10:17 AM

I have a 1997 Quest. Purchased and on the road since September 1997. The interval for changing the timing belt is 105k. The van has 78k miles on it now. Is the repair
time-dependent or mileage-dependent? Should the repair be done now? Also, the belts are squealing when the AC is turned on, right after the engine is started. If the AC is not engaged, there is no noise! Then the noise goes away. Whats going on? My mechanic says it's the belt(s) slipping. Others say it is the belt tensioner.

"Is the repair time-dependent or mileage-dependent?"
That is a Factory Recommended Mileage, based on Tests & Info the Factory has established. Following a Good Service Plan will usually make your Vehicle last longer.
Of course, there are those that will tell you that they never follow Factory Guidelines and have no problems.

"Should the repair be done now?"
Regardless of Mileage, the Belts, Oil, Coolant, Battery should be checked on a Regular Basis.
The Belt should be checked for wear, cracks, chips, etc.and Relaced if it shows any of those signs.

" the belts are squealing when the AC is turned on, right after the engine is started"
If the Belt "squeals" only when the A/C is turned ON, it probably is the Belt. Heat & Wear causes the Belt to stretch. When replacing the Belt, Clean ALL Pulleys, Check the Tensioner for proper Strength & Check Alignment of All Pulleys.

Relist: I prefer a second opinion.
My 1997 Nissan Sentra (in service since September 1997) has a timing belt service rec of 105k miles. The current mileage is 78k. I've been told that 105k is just a recomendation; and, that the 9 years of operation is a more determinant factor. Is the operational age of the car an issue? More than the 105k service interval?

Reply to Lurch's Post: thank you

Let's see, trying to get an extra charge, then having your second opinion source e-mail me directly - when it's supposed to be done through the website......hmmmmmmmmmm! I think I'll e-mail Tammy.

New post :

The non-reply from a "second opinion" on the website and the inadequate reply from Tammy, not to mention the non-reply from lurch makes me quite angry. I will make sure to tell everyone I know what website does NOT answer questions.

I'm not sure what you got angry about. Lurch was simply advising you that he was going to request someone else to come in. I'm sure he just forgot to check the "free" box when he notified you but he never expected you to pay again.

As for your question, there really aren't any posted time intervals for timing belt replacement, just mileage intervals.

That doesn't mean that they don't deteriorate over time but it isn't a serious issue. You don't have an emergency by any means but I probably would replace that one a little earlier that the 105K that is recommended. Any time it's convenient for you in the next 10K would probably be good.
