'99 Disco II - just had all hoses and belts replaced. Car makes a chirping noise as it climbs hills and when it accellerates from a stop. Changed belts to a new set. Chirping continues. One opinion is that u-joint in front differential is bad. any ideas?

Already Tried:

Reply to RIP's Post: Roughly 60k miles. The noise is new as of 1 day after the repair, but not the day of the repair. When I got the car back, I drove it roughly 70 miles round trip with a 2-hr layover in the middle. Seriously overheated, although i didn't notice it on the dashboard. Fenders were hot to the touch when I got out. They hadn't bled the hoses, so an air block kept fluid from running thru. Next day, chirp shows up going up hill. (Steep hill right outside house). Goes away when car is warmed up and running on freeway.

Reply to RIP's Post: It ran rough for just a few seconds while accelerating into a merge after the new hoses were put on, while it was hot. It had been running really rough prior to getting the new hoses put on. Didn't notice anything wrong with the temp guage, before or after the repair. Plenty of power, smooth acceleration now.
It's definitely a chirp. Sounded like a belt. Mechanic thought it was a belt and replaced one of the new ones, but didn't fix the problem.

I'm concerned that it ran rough for the moment. But it may have not been enough to damage the engine. In some cases a severe heatup will have warped or damaged an interior engine component and will reveal it's failure under the most stress, and going up a steep hill, it the best test.

I've heard u-joints make this noise, and it follows most your description of "under acelleration," and "up the hill." But, the fact that it happened the day after the heat up, it's just too coincidental, especially for the milage the vehicle has. Also, on u-joints, to help test, we can add grease to them and allieviate the noise enough to tell if the joint needs replacement.

Form what you describe about the noise sounding like a belt, and the fact that the mechanic thought it may have even been one, leads me to believe the problem may be comming from the front accessory/belt area. The heatup could have affected one of the front components such as the water pump (most likely), alternator, power steering pump, a/c compressor, the engine fan (more liekly). Let me do some research to morrow morning and i'll leave you a more precise idea of where to go from here. Thanks,

-Rip
