I HAVE A 1986 300ZX NON TURBO, AUTOMATIC WITH 104,000 MILES. IT'S BEEN RUNNING HOT - NOT OVERHEATING BUT ALMOST. AFTER DRIVING FOR ALMOST 45 MINUTES, I STOPPED, TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND HEARD A LOUD GURGLINNG NOISE COMING FROM THE RESERVOIR. THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM BOILING BUBBLES FROM THE BOTTOM CENTER OF THE RESERVOIR. I RECENTLY HAD A NEW THERMOSTAT INSTALLED, AND THE WATER PUMP CHECKED OUT. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE PROBLEM IS?

If there was recent work done to the cooling system, it may only be low coolant. Also look for the obvious leaks, and check the cap out. The cap is designed to hold around 15-16 psi on the system. Also, the 'overflow' bottle serves a function of keeping the cooling system topped off. Be sure it is atleast 1/3 filled at all times. Other possibilities are head gasket & clogged radiator But these things will be noticed immediately. The engine will over heat in 5 minutes if the radiator was clogged.

The head gasket thing is a real possibility. Perform a block test. Or, atleast have the cooling system pressure tested while being full of coolant. This is the best way to find any leaks. If there are no leaks and the pressure still drops, You will need to perform a block test to verify that the head needs to come off the engine.
