electrical problem
Sent to Car Experts July 15 08:06 PM

Dear 2carpros,
I own a 1979 chevy c-20 pickup with about 150,000 miles, given to me by my Dad. I've replaced just about everything there is to be replaced in a truck this old. Recently while on my way to work I noticed the volt gauge on the dash reading over 18 volts. I turned right around and parked the truck in my driveway because I knew this wasn't good. The truck wasn't running for more than 5 minutes like this. Later on that day when at home, I tried to start the truck, nothing happened. I know with my year truck, the voltage regulator is built into the alternator. I had it bench tested at the nearest NAPA and it is in good condition, checked the battery and all fuses and all are fine, also all grounds are good. But when you turn the key, nothing. Something shorted somewhere. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Jim in Albany, NY

Reply to gearhead4u's Post: We found out that this was not the problem. It had to do with the fuseable link

when the fusible link blows the power to the back of the alternator is cut off.(it is the end of that circuit).the question was the first step to diagnose that fusible link.

next time just report back with info and i will continue to try and help.

i'm glad you got it figured out though it is a common problem

take good care
