Rough Idle/ Stalls
Sent to Car Experts July 10 05:00 PM

My 2001 Chrysler Sebring, 2.7L engine light came on when my daughter was driving the car and started to idle roughly and stall at stops. When I can get it to run, it idles very rough and the RPM's jump from 600 to 1200 as if I am manually reving it with the accelerator pedal then it eventually stalls and I am not able to start it again. It acts at that point like it's flooded and there is smell of raw gasoline.

Turnng the key 3X to check the engine code reveals 51 and under the odometer display it read 1193 and 1684 then said DONE, but after I reset the computer I could not duplicate the four digit codes. I replaced the O2 sensor before the converter but the problem persists. I am thinking MAP sensor but hesitate due to cost. Could this be a timing belt problem or what else would cause these symptoms. Thanks in advance for your help.

The two main codes you need to worry about are the 51 and the1193. The 1193 indicates a problem with the air temp sensor. It is located in the intake duct between the air filter and the engine. Make sure it is hooked up and clean. The 51 indicates a lean reading from the O2 sensor. You may have a vacuum leak or a bad EGR valve. Check all of your vacuum hoses thoroughly for holes or cracks and see if you can locate the EGR valve. The picture under the hood should show you the location. Let me know what you find.
