What would cause my a/c to stop blowing cold air? It blows ...

What would cause my a/c to stop blowing cold air? It blows hot then cold...stays like that for a little while and then blows cold again... then blows hot again...I bought a guage from AutoZone and it shows 48 to 50 psi in the a/c system...I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado...305 V8

Optional Information:

Already Tried:
checked the a/c system for freon pressure...indicated 48 to 50 psi with outside temp at 87 deg F...

Does your gauge only check pressure on one line? Is this the pressure while the compressor is running?

Yes, this pressure is while the compressor is running and the a/c setting is on "high" inside the cab.

Yes, this the low-pressure line guage reading only.

Also, the a/c doesn't cut out, when I run it on "high" (level 4 or 5) on the dash controls.
