NUMBER: 11-53-98

DATE: 1-05-99

APPLICABILITY:
97 - 98 Legacy, Impreza, and Forester Manual Transmission vehicles with 2.5L & 2.2L engines

Subject:
Hesitation On Acceleration

In the event you encounter a customer complaint of a slight engine hesitation between 1500 - 2500 rpm's when the engine is cold or hot, perform the following:

Eliminate all external influences, such as a incorrect or dirty air filter, loose or cracked intake duct, dirty fuel filter, low fuel pressure, PVC system, or low engine vacuum that would indicate an external leak or an internal engine component. Check for trouble codes and repair as necessary. Verify the fuel quality.

If all external components are confirmed to be operating within vehicle specifications, the hesitation may be caused by the ignition control logic in the BCM. Under certain low rpm driving patterns, the ignition control system can pick up engine vibrations through the knock sensor and may retard the ignition timing. This ignition timing is learned by the ECM and placed in memory. Note: This area of the memory can not be viewed by using the Select Monitor. When the vehicle is driven under these conditions, the timing may be retarded and could cause the engine to hesitate on acceleration. To confirm this condition, road test the vehicle while viewing the Knock Sensor Signal on the Select Monitor. If you duplicate the hesitation, and the reading on the monitor is around -10 Degrees, you will need to change the ECM to correct the concern.

Note : Some vehicles (shown on the following two charts) were produced with two different emission systems during the same model year. To identify which system you have, look at the Vehicle Identification Number. Refer to the chart to identify which system you have on the 98MY Forester and 97MY Impreza vehicles and choose the correct part number from the chart in this bulletin.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: My legacy is a station wagon AUTOMATIC transmission. This reply is for manual transmission vehicle. Here is the detailed problem

Subaru Legacy station wagon AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION 1996/97 slips. That is it feels like when in a manual transmission car, the clutch plate is worn out and car loses traction. It can also feels like hesitation on acceleration. More force on the accelerator does not help
and car smokes if "forced" in this way. One mechanic recommended to replace the airflow meter. Unfortunately I have not found the
actual replacement spare part No 22680 AA 280 A 36-613R80 6Y19A.

What do you think is the problem with this subaru?

Thanks

Your question was requesting a specific TSB and that is what I got for you.

If your automatic transmission is slipping, you need to have it rebuilt.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: I think there was an error. You deleted the question that was important and you answered the question that was minor. The major question, was the problem of on/off hesitation on acceleration. The 2nd and minor question was to check out the technical document. You chose to answer the easy minor topic which does not lead to a solution.
Paying the &10 dollar is no big deal, you can have it, but I have not got the value I was expecting. Unless you can also give me a lead to how to solve the bigger problem. I described it, it is not transmission slippage as you suggest that I get the transmission rebuilt. This is an on/off problem, sometimes it occurs sometimes it does not occur as explained in the question.

There is no mention of a transmission problem there. When you refer to a hesitation, that indicates an engine problem. I got you the exact TSB number that you asked for.

Your transmission issue is not something you'll get solved over the Internet. You have slippage. That's a serious internal problem and will require considerable inspection and testing to resolve. It needs to be looked at by a transmission shop but likely will need major repairs.
