Question

transmission service

Sent to Car Experts July 02, 2006 5:00 p.m.

I have a 1999 Volvo S80 with 256,00 Km.
I brought it in to have the Automatic Transmission oil and filter changed. The Techs found large pieces of clutch material in the oil pan.The car was road tested and everything still seems to work fine. The shop recommends a rebuild at approx. $1000.
Is it common to find pieces of automatic clutch material in the pan?

Optional Information:

No it is not common to find LARGE clutch material in the pan. What is common is to find very fine ground up clutch material. Is the trransmission giving you any problems? When was the fluid last changed prior to this?

the transmission shop test drove the car and didnt notice anything wrong with the way the transmission shifted they also scanned it for fault code..none present. The pieces of clutch material were about 1/4 inch in size. The shop says the hydraulic pressure is keeping the clutch plates together for now but that the plates could let go at any time, possibly causing more damage to other parts of the transmission

Not usually the case. You have several clutch discs in each gear. You can lose some clutch material and still be okay for a long time. Just keep up on your fluid service, and if you notice any transmission slippage then you may need the trans rebuilt. Let me know if you have any other questions.
