I own a 1996 Dodge Avenger. After I am driving for about a hour it shuts off and will not start again unless you leave it sit for about 45 minutes. I have had it to a dealer and they cannot find the problem. Do you have any suggestions that would be helpful?

The fuel pump may be getting hot and turning off. Does this happen everytime no matter what? Does anything change your time frame, such as fuel level in the tank?

Try turning the key on and off about 4 times. On the last time leave the key on. See if the engine light starts flashing. If it does let me know and I will tell you how to count the flashes for the codes.

Any time. This is to see if there are any stored codes in the computer.

You can try your local Autozone to have the computer scanned for codes. Without knowing them, I would point my finger at three common problems on this car. First is the crank sensor going bad. Second is the fuel pump. Third would be a computer problem. I have seen the crank sensor go out on these many times and cause this problem.
