Where is the VTTS in my Grand Cherokee
Sent to Car Experts June 30 02:30 AM

My engine is disabled and the lights flash about once per day. Several years ago the alarm would go off five minutes after I parked and set the alarm. Now it does that rarely. A Jeep dealer once told me I had defective switches in the hood and right front door and they would charge $250 for repair.
The answer I usually get when I ask how to disable the system is: Take it to the Jeep dealer. The Jeep Dealer said they will not disable it, only repair it. I was once told I could unplug the VTTS and leave it unplugged without affecting the operation of the vehicle. If that is the case, all I want to know is, where is the VTTS in my 93 Grand Cherokee and will I be able to operate the car normally without the alarm system?

Optional Information:
1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 V8

Already Tried:
I know how to disable the system by using the key in the door.

That would be the VTSS.
The Removal of any of these Components may cause different problems, like Door Locks inop, Interior Lights inop, etc.
The Keyless Entry Activates it. The Keyless Entry Module is located Between the Sun Visors.
Also, you can Dis-Able by hooking one end of a Wire to GROUND and the other end to VIOLET / Yellow in the Kick Panel. (verify with Meter )

Also there is a SECURITY ALARM MODULE RELAY
The Security Alarm Module Relay is in the relay center located under the glove box. Should be the 1st Relay in the row of 3.

Reset Procedure

NOTE: This information applies to a Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) that was armed when the battery was disconnected and reconnected.

When the armed VTSS senses that the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, it enters its power-up mode. In the power-up mode the alarm system remains armed following a battery failure or disconnect. If the VTSS was armed prior to a battery disconnect or failure, the system will have to be actively or passively disarmed following a battery reconnection.

The power-up mode will also apply if the battery goes dead while the system is armed and battery jump-starting is attempted. The engine no-run feature will prevent the engine from starting until the alarm system has been actively or passively disarmed.

Passive disarming of the Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) occurs when the vehicle is unlocked using the key to unlock either front door or the liftgate. Active disarming of the VTSS occurs when the vehicle is unlocked by depressing the Unlock button of the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter.

Once the alarm has been activated (horn sounding, lights flashing, and the engine no-run feature), either disarming method will deactivate the alarm.

Depressing the Panic button (if equipped) on the RKE transmitter will also disarm the VTSS, but the horn will sound and the lights will flash for about three minutes as part of the Panic feature. The horn and lights can be stopped by pressing any of the RKE transmitter's buttons or driving the vehicle above 15 mph.

Reply to Lurch's Post: I unplugged the keyless entry (in the ceiling console). Everything still seems to be working and the alarm did not go off.

I unplugged the #27 (first circuit breaker under the glove box)and the alarm did not go off but I noticed in the owner's manual that it controls the front wiper, also so I will plug it back in.

I looked at the wiring behind the right front kick panel - 100's of wires- and would not know where to unplug anything - looks like large bundles of wiring.

I have not used the keyless entry in years, but if you think disconnecting it can solve the problem, I need to drive only a couple days to tell, since the start/kill switch and alarm has been activated almost daily for several days.

Thanks for the help so far, surely we can get this solved soon.

Reply to Lurch's Post: Dear Mr Lurch,

I unplugged both fuses 6 Security Alarm Module and 7 Security Alarm Relay-Security Alarm Module.

I tried to set off the alarm by unlocking the doors manually after locking the doors with the power locks. This usually sets it off but it did not activate the alarm.

I then started the engine and the kill switch shut it off 5 seconds letter. I started it once again with the same results. I replaced the fuses. Everything is working now including the alarm system. Perhaps the wiring work-around is the way to go if you can coach me through that. I have no knowledge of electricals but I do have a test meter, a couple alligator clips and I have willing.

You would need to locate the VIOLET / Yellow wire behind Driver Kick Panel. Correct wire will show Ground Pulse when Doors are UNLOCKED with Remote or Door Key.
You can attach one end of a Wire to the VIOLET / Yellow and attach other end to one side of a ON/OFF switch and other side of Switch to GROUND.
Or, you can hook wire to GROUND.

Reply to Lurch's Post: I will attempt again to find the wire and ground it. I assume that means I will have to cut it and attach it to a ground. Wish me luck.

Reply to Lurch's Post: I spliced into it and got a spark and smoke. I went to an alarm shop and got them to do it. I then realized I had not read your instructions precisely which said to go in on the driver side. I went in on the passenger side (since the kick panel had already been removed while doing some carpeting work) which is the alarm activation side. The shop installed a deactivation switch which so I can hit if the engine kill switch activates.

So you did your part and I am trying to find the ACCEPT button so you will get paid.

Thanks,
