This is for a 1999Nissan Maxima SE V6 3.0L. I removed the mass airflow sensor to do a visual inspection because i retrieved a MAF code from the computer. Everything looked ok until I touched the ceramic element inside the airflow chamber. It broke in half. Since the halfs were still touching I decided to reinstall the sensor and replace it later. When I started the engine it was running rough with a strong fuel smell, then the engine died and will not start. Prior to my involvement the car and engine was running great. Will the mass airflow sensor cause this situation?

Yes, that's your problem. The MAF tells the computer how much air is entering the intake. with a few other inputs(o2 sensor, TPS, coolant temp, air temp.) the computer adjusts the fuel mixture. With the faulty signal it's giving the computer it is puting in to much fuel for the amount of air that is really comming in. Replace the sensor(it can't be fixed) when you goto start it up if it doesn't fire right off in a couple of tries it's probably flooded. Hold the gas pedal to the floor. this does two things. It lets in more air, whitch you need if it's flooded, and with the low engine RPM the computer shuts down the injectors. It's called clear flood mode. Once it starts it goes into normal operation. Hope this helps. Please accept my answer if your satisfied. Thanks 32dmadden
