ford f-150 engine trouble

I have a 1998 ford f-150 6 cylinder . the motor has a loud tapping sound towards the top of the engine. It doesn't seem to have any loss of power . it is not smoking or using oil but I am afraid to drive it. Does this engine have valve tappits that may have slipped or what could the possible causes be. I haven't taken it to a mechanic because I don't want to blow up the engine before I get it there if it can be saved. I thank you for your time and consideration in answering this question. Jim
