'91 Mercedes Sedan - Heater stuck on, EGR problem.

Sent to Car Experts June 02 02:44 PM

I have owned a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300E since last fall. It runs great except:

1) My check engine light turned on about 6 weeks ago (just after gunning the engine to avoid an accident). And. . .

2) My Climate Control system is stuck on medium-low heat.

I had my mechanic diagnose the warning light. "your EGR valve is bad . . $350 parts & labor". I declined the repair. I called the dealership service department. "check the EGR hoses, they can get a carbon build up - clean them out first". I did that, no visible obstructions; the light is still on. However the car idles and runs just fine, 20 mpg!

The AC: It behaved intermittently when I bought it, It would sometimes work fine on manual settings both hot and cold. On the thermostat settings, it was quite unpredictable but seemed to try to blow hot and cold. ( I realize Mercedes thermostat settings require closed windows and sunroof to function). At times it would suddenly blow when I came to a stop? ?

Well for about 5 months now it seems to "think" it belongs on lo heat at the defrost vents only. At idle it barely blows low heat, on the freeways it cranks out a medium heat. The (same ) mechanic said the heater door is "stuck" and it may have additional problems.

Could both of these problems be a vacuum issue?

Thanks in advance for your quick reply. I'm in Southern California and my kids are baking on the freeways!

It's common for the EGR valve to fail on this engine, however, the hoses do have to be checked, and that vacumme is present at the EGR from the electrical solinoid valve. The quickest test you can do is apply vacumme from a manual vacumme pump (sold at most parts suppliers, fairly inexpensive). If the valve does not hold vacumme, or hold vacumme but the engine doesn't run rough while the vacumme is applied, the valve is bad. This valve lists for approx. $280.00. You should be able to find it in the aftermarket for slightly less. The EGR system is used to cool combustion temperatures, which in turn reduces Nox emmisions (Nitrous-Oxides). So without the EGR sytem working properly, the engine may "ping" under loads, and fail smog, and or ruin the catalyst if the repair is prolonged over a long time. The valve is simple to install yourself, if your mechanically inclined which might save you some labor time.

On the climate control condition, it trully needs corect diagnosing; but it sounds like the typical failure of the Control Head Unit. The problem here is the Control Head list price between $380.00-$420.00! There is very little used ones out there due to there common failure, and most units available are rebuilt. You may want to search the internet for possible inexpesive units. Try Ebay, they come on there from time to time. Another common failure on these that causes constant heat is the mono valve or heater valve which will get stuck open and circulate hot coolant thru the interior.

"apply vacumme from a manual vacumme pump"

I'm assuming theses pumps come with some basic instructions?

Yes apply vacumme from a manual pump @ no more than 15 in. The pump kits do come with general diagnosing instructions.
