Question

ECM?

Sent to Car Experts May 31, 2006 3:40 p.m.

Freind has a Saturn. Runs well, no smoke no real leaks, starts right up. BUT as you raise the RPM up, it starts to act as if it is on a REV limiter. Guess ta mate about 2500 to 3000 RPM. RPM will PULSATE, up and down between 2000 and 3000. #1 cyl sleeve was full of oil. They replaced the valve cover gasket, put new plugs and wires. Tried it again and it still does it. ECM?????

Optional Information:
1997 Saturn 2dr sport 4cyl ohc

Does this occur while driving, or are you revving it up while sitting still?

Is this all the information about the symptom? I would appreciate a bit more info on how it drives and when the symptom is more noticeable. suggestions:

  • does it do it more during acceleration
  • or decceleration
  • what is the speed of the vehicle when this happens

From the information you have provided the 3 most obvious sensors that i can think of that would/have been known to cause this are:

TPS(throttle position sensor)

MAF(mass air flow sensor)

MAP(manifold absolute pressure sensor)

Out of these 3 sensors, I would check the MAFsensor first(if equipped with one) otherwise I would check the TPS and last the MAP.

also, what model is the car?

Before doing anything, I would highly suggest that you take the vehicle to autozone or AAMCO and have them scan the ECM for any trouble codes if you haven't done so yet. They do this for free and this is always the first step to be done on OBDII systems.
