Check engine light

I have a 2003 gmc envoy with 40000 miles on it . My "check engine" light came on . I took my Envoy to Auto Zone to have and they said that my EGR value is bad. I am concern with what they are telling me because this is a late model SUV. I wonder could it be a bad sensor instead.
