I have a 97 Ford Explorer with 157,000 miles - great ...

Sent to Car Experts May 09, 2006 10:32 a.m.

I have a 97 Ford Explorer with 157,000 miles - great vehicle and I love it! I have had a check engine light on for a while - probably an emissions problem. I have been very faithful about oil changes, etc. When I started my car today it backfired through the air intake and blew away the plastic cover??? Help what caused this! My husband is a very good mechanic, but on older vintage cars like a 56 Ford, 55-57 chevys, ford and chevy trucks. He can fix most anything but the newer fuel injected computerized things are more difficult.

Optional Information:
1997 Ford Explorer 4.0-push rods

Already Tried:
Removed the parts of the air intake to start trouble shooting.

I have not had any power loss. My husband thought it was an intake problem - the upper intake mainford-the plastic housing broke into several pieces when it back fired.

Do any of the vaccuum lines going to the intake smell like fuel? Have you ever checked the trouble code for the engine light? That will probably give a good idea to what might be going on here.

No fuel smell, however the inside of the intake manifold was coated with an oily carbon like residue. We will check the trouble code.

Finally got the trouble codes today - Cam positioning sensor and Ignition coil sensor. My husband is reading up on the problems and I believe he is replacing the Ignition coil sensor

Sounds like you're on the right track now. I'm certain after replacing one or both of those sensors you will be back in shape. Let me know how it all turns out.
