02 Lancer with a 2.0L 4 cyl. Manual tranny. Starts good.
Sent to Car Experts April 28 11:41 AM

02 Lancer with a 2.0L 4 cyl. Manual tranny. Starts good. After it starts it wants to die. If I hit the gas the car will wind up. If I hold down the gas pedal it wont stay running. If I pump the gas pedal slowly I can keep it running. Also Altenator light is on and the altenotor is working. Got it tested, and a put a volt meter on the battery with car running and it read 14.5 volts.

Optional Information:
2002 Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0

Already Tried:
Checked EGR valve - Hold vaccum and I can hear it moving back and forth. Checked fuel pressure regulator. No fuel in vaccuum hose and disconneting the vaccuum line temp. Doesn't help. Does change how it runs a little. Seams slightly easier to keep running e.g. don't need to pump the gas as much. check all sparkplugs and wires. look good. Chech engine light just came on and code reader sayed it detected misfire on cylinder 2. When the car idle drops i know it is missing on more than one cyl. though

Hello Jerry

Based on your description of the problem (which was written well) it sounds like you either have bad fuel or your drawing air into the fuel system. You would have to check all fuel line connections for either cracked hoses or loose connections. Example, if a fuel filter was recently replaced and a clamp or fastener was left loose air will enter the fuel system creating the void you have.

Think back, did this happen as a result of a recent repair or did this happen after receiving fuel. Sometimes if we look back we can come up with a solution to why this happened.

I don't think this is an ignition issue.

Dan

Reply to Dan's Post: I have a fuel pressure tester but thier seems to be no port to hook my tester up to. Also I havn't did any work to the fuel system. I checked as good as I could and found no leaks. If air gets in should gas come out?
Sorry it took me so long to come back. I was gone of a trip out of town, then I got your responce and spent a lot of time looking it over trying to check anyhting wrong.

Sometimes it will leak and other times it will just draw air without any indication of a problem. You could also have contaminated fuel which will give you the same problem you've described. The fuel would have to be removed and renewed to check that theory or you could draw the fuel from a separate fuel source, a can with a hose.

Be very careful when working around the fuel system.

Reply to Dan's Post: Sorry Dan I also put new gas in from a gas can. I put the gas in when it was just about empty. Just now I realized that the wire and plugs look really black. I'm going to try replacing those. They are bad anyway. Maybe it will help.

For whatever its worth check your coolant level. The black plugs spell out "rich running". Read the link I send you concerning coolant sensors.

Coolant Sensor

The water temperature sensor communicates information to and from the computer. If this has failed to work properly, it would definitely create issues like the one you described. Before we condemn the sensor let’s make sure the coolant level is correct and the antifreeze is properly mixed. The antifreeze should be 50-50 one part antifreeze and the other part water. If the mixture is wrong, it could affect the sensor. Most people do not pay enough attention to this little device, which can give you many problems.
