how do i know when my ac compressor is bad if it still ...

how do i know when my ac compressor is bad if it still pumps cold air. it vibrates when the compressor warms-up after a few minutes use. is that a bearing or is there some thing else that could cause the same effect that would not happen when the ac is off.
