The rear main seal is located in a housing on the rear of the block. To replace the seal, it is necessary to remove the engine and perform the work on an engine stand or work bench.

  1. Remove the engine from the vehicle and position on a suitable holding fixture.
  2. Unscrew the retaining bolts and remove the housing from the block.

  3. Remove the separator from the housing.

  4. Using a small pry bar, pry out the old seal.

  5. Clean the housing and the separator.

The factory recommends that the engine and trans axle be removed as a unit.

  1. If equipped with fuel injection, relieve the fuel system pressure as follows:

    1. Turn the ignition to the OFF position.

    2. Loosen the fuel filler cap to release fuel tank pressure.

    3. Disconnect the fuel pump harness connector normally located under the vehicle toward the rear of the fuel tank.

    4. Start the vehicle and allow it to run until it stalls from lack of fuel. Turn the key to the OFF position.

    5. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then reconnect the fuel pump connector.

  2. Remove the under cover, if equipped.

  3. Match mark the hood and hinges and remove the hood assembly. Remove the air cleaner assembly and all adjoining air intake duct work.

  4. Disconnect the fuel supply line, return line and vent hoses. Prior to disconnecting the fuel supply or return lines, wrap shop towels around the fitting that is being disconnected to absorb any fuel spray caused by residual pressure in the lines.

  5. Disconnect the backup light, engine, alternator and oil pressure harnesses.

  6. Drain the engine coolant.

  7. Label and disconnect the trans axle oil cooler lines, radiator hoses and remove the radiator assembly.

  8. Disconnect the brake booster, fuel, evaporative canister and heater hoses.

  9. Disconnect the accelerator, trans axle, cruise control and speedometer cables.

  10. Detach the air conditioning compressor from the mounting bracket and hang out of the way with a piece of wire. Do not disconnect the refrigerant lines.

  11. Remove the power steering pump and wire aside.

  12. Raise the vehicle and support safely.

  13. Remove the oil pan shield and drain the trans axle.

  14. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe.

  15. Remove the lower arm ball joint and stabilizer bar at the point where it is mounted to the lower arms.

  16. Remove the half shaft from the housing by prying against the trans axle housing with a pry bar.

  17. Suspend the lower arm and drive shafts aside using wire attached to the vehicle under body.

  18. Attach an engine lifting device to the engine. Raise the engine just enough to take the tension off the engine mounts.

  19. Remove the front roll stopper, engine damper and rear roll stopper.

  20. Remove the engine mount bolts.

  21. Remove the blind plugs from the inside of the right fender shield and remove the trans axle mounting bracket bolts.

  22. Remove the left mount insulator bolt.

  23. Raise the engine and trans axle slightly and inspect to make sure all cables, hoses and harness connectors are disconnected.

  24. While directing the trans axle side downward, lift the engine and trans axle assembly up and out of the vehicle.

To install

  1. While directing the trans axle side downward, direct the engine and trans axle assembly into the vehicle. Install all mounting hardware and control bracket retainers.

  2. Tighten the center cross member-to-body bolts to 43-58 ft. lbs. (58-77 Nm).

  3. Once the engine is securely in place, remove the engine lifting device.

  4. Connect the lower arm and the remaining suspension components disassembled during engine removal.

  5. Install the half shafts to the trans axle housing. Make sure the new C-clips are fully engaged into the differential assembly.

  6. Connect the front exhaust pipe. Refill the trans axle with fluid.

  7. Install the oil pan shield and lower the vehicle.

  8. Install the power steering pump.

  9. Reconnect the fuel lines using new O-rings where required.

  10. Install the air conditioning compressor to the mounting bracket.

  11. Connect the accelerator, trans axle, cruise control and speedometer cables.

  12. Connect the brake booster, fuel, evaporative canister and heater hoses.

    1. Install the radiator. Connect the trans axle oil cooler lines and radiator hoses.

    2. Refill the engine coolant.

    3. Connect the backup light, engine, alternator and oil pressure harnesses.

    4. Connect the negative battery cable. Install the air cleaner assembly.

    5. Start the engine and check for leaks. Allow the engine to run until normal operating temperature is reached and recheck all fluid levels.

    6. Replace the hood making sure to align the match marks made during removal. Allow the engine to cool and recheck the coolant level.

good luck
