My 98 Jetta GT quits when I put it in gear for an hour or so after I hit a puddle. Idles fine and has no other problems. . . . please help!

1998 Volkswagen Jetta GT 2.0 V4

Already Tried:
nothing . . . the clutch is a little worn down but other than that everything runs great when it is dry. I just purchased this car 3 weeks ago and prior owner denies any knowledge of the problem.

Relist: I still need help.
noone has replied with an answer. I suspect it might be the plug wires and distributor cap. . . any other ideas?
