Fuel system blockage

Sent to Car Experts April 06 03:43 PM

I have a 1991 Chry Lebaron with a 1993 Chrysler 300 v6 engine, auto trans. The problem started about 4 months ago. At first when the gas tank was at about 1/4 full, sometimes the engine just stopped runing and before the car came to a stop it would start up with a jolt as the transmission kicked in. Same way a stick shift starts by pushing it and popping the cluch. When I would turn left the above would happen everytime and the engine would shutdown before I would get out of the turn, turning right didn't have much effect. The sharper the turn the faster it happened. After about 2 months this was happening regardless of the level of the tank and whether I was going straight or turning didn't matter. So far I have had the fuel lines cleaned out, replaced the fuel filter a couple of times. This didn't help much. After a day it was still happening. The mechanic then partially cleaned out the gas tank. The car ran ok for a couple of days and then it started again. I even had the fuel pump replaced, but it didn't help. Then the (i'm not sure of the part) AT Solenoid went out. Transmission wouldn't change gears. They replaced the part and the transmission is working fine. I have a feeling that the continued stalling and sudden startup which jolted the transmission may have caused the Solenoid to fail. My feeling is that particles from the gas tank are getting into the fuel lines and jets and that either the tank needs to be totally cleaned or replaced. When the mechanic cleaned out some of the debris it sounded like he found debris from rust. Also now during the times it runs without suddenly stalling, I smell gas fumes. Also when it gets clogged but not enough to stall there is hesitation when I accelerate. Sometimes it requires pumping the pedal until the line or jet clears. Most times when it stalls it's immediate without warning. Something just totally blocks the fuel, but usually once the car comes to a stop, It will start up the first time I try to restart it. Usually when I restart the engine races. Also they replaced the spark plugs which didn't do anything. When I stop and put the shift in nuetral or park the engine seems to be racing. this has been happening almost all the time. Also when I come to a stop at a light, it used to be that I would here the transmission kind of wind down and come to a smooth stop, ever since this all started most of the time when I stop at a light or corner, it's a jerky stop, like the engine is going to fast and the transmission doesn't get out of gear fast enough. Maybe it's not the gas tank but rather some other part, I don't know and apparently neither do my mechanics and it's getting expensive. A couple of times when I've stalled and tried to restart the car, it would start up but the idle was weak and if I pressed down on the accelerator it would either stall or bearly keep running, then it would stall out. If I put it in gear it would stall out because the idle was not going fast enough. After a number of attempts it would start up with a vengence and it would seem that the blockage got blown out and the engine was racing.
Thanks for you time, I hope you can help. Is it difficult to replace the gas tank.

I would start by replacing the gas tank. If theres been rust inside of it then theres always going to be rust inside of it. Get that straight first. then make sure your fuel injectors are working properly. A fuel treatment( cleaning the fuel system) wouldnt hert. Make sur that the spark plugs are in working order and the gap is correct. Next I would start looking at the fuel injection system. Make sure the fuel rails, injectors, pumps and lines are MAINLY CLEAN and in working order. If debris in the fuel tank was the problem then everything that came in contact with the gas can be damaged including inside the engine. Its very important to make sure that your fuel system is clean to avoid extremly costly repairs in the future. In order too re4move the gas tank you have too unbolt the two medal straps that are holding it to the car. Gently lower the tank and dissconnect the fuel lines from the top noting there position. Installation is reverse of removel. You should pay as much for this answer as you feel you need the help. Hope that I helped. I will be gald to asist further more
